SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER
Thursday, December 22, 2011
While ’tis the season to be hedonous and merry, generous and warm, and indulge in gift receiving, ’tis also the season to think of others a bit less fortunate and spread your contagious collegiate cheer. This past Saturday, juniors Ryan, Annie, and Gelly volunteered alongside Uscoop’s community manager and social media guru Emily Hayes at the “Christmas Toy Giveaway.” An annual rally sponsored by the World Missions Inner City EXTENSION Center in Washington, D.C, the “Christmas Toy Giveaway” was facilitated in large part thanks to Emily’s hard work with the center to organize such a feat. Each year, families register for the rally and sign their children up for book clubs so that they may each leave with a Christmas gift.
As 962 kids 308 families anxiously awaited for Santa to arrive and pass out toys, the volunteers were responsible for entertaining the children. While many of the kids enjoyed playing tag and keep away games, most of the little girls flocked towards Ryan, Gelly, and Annie, in hopes that they would get the chance to braid hair. By the time the Uscoop team arrived, all three girls already had great looking do’s!
What was your favorite part of the day?: ”The rally was a huge success for the community of DC families and children. The best part of the experience was knowing that each child was going home with a christmas gift.” -Gelly, Stanford (more…)
