The bronzed babes at Rollins College have been lucky enough to soak up rays poolside all year long down in Winter Park, Florida. Thanks to Scout’s new line of stylish indigo beach bags, now they can schlep their belongings to the campus pool in practical fashion.

Navy or multicolor stripes, indigo ikat, turquoise chevron, and neutral crocodile, this Spring’s prints look especially chic with maxi dresses and floppy hats. Although we wouldn’t recommend it, worst case scenario you can even canon ball off the diving board with the water resistant bags in the pool for everyone’s amusement. (See photos for proof!)

Meet Max, a junior at Georgetown and all-star tennis player who took a chance on cherry red furniture when decking out his campus crib this year.

While opting for the bold desk, dresser, side table combo might have seemed daring at the time, and ladies, Max is quite a daring fella with his punch colored vespa, actually resulted in pure genius as a decorating call.

The vibrant colored metal furniture from CB2 offers an upbeat and modern feel to the tired wooden framework of the room, which otherwise would be dull and brown. Perhaps the spunky furniture works because the complimenting pieces are muted tones.

Take notes from Max’s sleek approach to updating a vintage room.

Bow ties, suspenders and madras Oh My!

Foxfield 2012 proved to be a wet and wild day full of crazy antics, water logged koozies and sopping wet tailgates. That didn’t stop these dapper looking gents from bringing their style savvy A game, though.

Mr. Foxfield was around every corner this year and we were there to greet him with a friendly smile and over sized camera. There were many of our tried and true favorite looks… seersucker suits, madras prints, bow ties, colored blazers and crazy pants. But our two favorite trendsetting finds that swept the infield were suspenders and a dash of 80′s flare.

Reflective glasses and neon colored rain slickers with retro 80′s graphics were the highlight of the show and screamed, “I’m loud, proud and ready to partake in the festivities, no matter how wet it is.” While 80′s neon was cool, we loved seeing the BMOCs that channeled their inner Gordon Gecko’s and rocked a pair of suspenders (another 80′s retro look) with confidence. Why oh why did these ever go out of style?

Enjoy our 2012 Mr. Foxfield picks… looking forward to what you all come up with next year.

Meet Wes, a junior entrepreneur at Gettysburg and co-founder of The Local Tap, a service targeted at college upper classmen … [...]

Meet Wes, a junior entrepreneur at Gettysburg and co-founder of The Local Tap, a service targeted at college upper classmen for deals on local bars sent right to your phone.

When did this idea surface? Wes: We started following what Groupon and Living Social were doing and wanted to try something out with target marketing. Then we came up with the idea to do something similar, specifically with bars and going after a younger audience.

How did you execute your idea? Wes: Once we came up with the idea to start a deal website, we realized we could really make it something cool. We wanted the name to be synonymous to “going out,” “drinking,” and appeal to young people. The name Local Tap sort of stuck. We bought the domain name, then went out and decided to pitch the idea to a bar. A local bar in Bethesda, MD loved the idea and it sort of took off from there. We raised capital, took the fall semester off, and was able to launch the website by the first week of October 2011. At that point we had 10 bars signed on.

So, how does it work? From your website what are the steps? Wes: 1. Plan Your Night
Choose the Local Tap bar you want to go to and purchase a $2.00 Tap Deal
 2. Head on out
Check your email, and bring your phone to the bar and show your Tap Deal to a bouncer
 3. Save!
Get a wristband and save 25% between 8:00pm and 11:00pm!

What’s your elevator pitch? Wes: The Local Tap is a service that gives you, the customer, a new option when hitting the town. Our coupons provide instant savings at your favorite bars in the D.C Metropolitan area, but now, you choose the bar. We open the door; all you have to do is walk in. We’ve worked out lifetime deals with the bars so the deal is available everyday of the week.Who did you start it with? What are your roles? Wes: Bill Walton, my college roommate We pretty much split the roles. I’m the CFO, so I handle most of the financial and managerial duties. Bill is the CCO, so he handles more of the design and tech side of business. Now that I’m back at school, we travel down to DC twice a week to meet with our CEO and President. It’s also important to stay in contact with the local bars we’ve signed on.

What’s next? Wes: We’re currently expanding nationally. We’re about to open up in New York, Philly, Boston, and Rhode Island. After that, we’re looking to expand further west to Chicago and the West Coast. In addition, we’re coming out with an Android app in one week, with an Apple app to follow 2 weeks later.

Crowd Favorite? Wes: Definitely the bars in Georgetown. A lot of people purchase the deal for Rhino.

What has been most exciting about launching this? Wes: The suspense. There is something different going on everyday. You learn something new everyday and realize how little you knew before. People have also been really great about helping us out. It’s been really exciting and we’re really looking forward to expanding.

Meet Elizabeth, a junior at Marquette who cleverly revitalized her parents throw away furniture with preppy pastel fabrics to decorate her classic American dorm room.

The Cleveland native and JFK Jackie-O lover explains, “I wanted to have things that were unique to my tastes so I did a lot of going through stuff at home to find older objects instead of going for the mass-produced posters and such. The pastels/whites are calming to me so I can relax in my room and the monograms bring a ‘me’ touch to the room!” Her clean classic look has spurts of Ralph Lauren, antique items, and black and white photos to create the aesthetic.

Fix-Ups? E: I found chairs which I reupholstered with Ralph Lauren fabric and painted to create my own twist. I revitalized the frame on my wall by painting it white this summer.

Cool Finds? E: The inauguration poster was from when my dad worked on the campaign. The boot poster was designed and created by my Uncle Tim Althauser. The Cleveland Indians signed frame was from when I worked there for the past 4 years. Antique “E” from a screen door that my mom found.

Paintings and Pictures? E: Chevron painting inspired by Uscoop! AI added my monogram. Pictures are important to my room, as seen Favorite are the photos of framed family.

What better time to rock a top hat and a cane, Bert style from Mary Poppins, than the last day of school? Following a tradition that dates back to 1916, University of Pennsylvania juniors were lucky enough to celebrate Hey Day 2012 last week, by wearing red shirts, carrying canes, and biting into each other’s styrofoam hats while wandering down Locust Walk on their last day of class.

This celebration is unique to Penn and marks the “moving up” of juniors to the senior class. The parade down Locust Walk ends in front of College Hall where the president of the school addresses the new senior class. Its tradition is visible throughout the day, however, in recent decades Hey Day has become less formal and much more of an an exuberant outdoor affair for students to enjoy.

Meet Bo, a junior at Lehigh and outgoing president at Fiji fraternity. Living on the top level in his two room suite, Mr. Pres. pimps out his pad in a series of “foto real fo flor” area rugs which he deems from time to time as “frat mats”.

We caught up with the architecture and civil engineering major to learn about his usage of the washable and customizable fo flor wonder mats in his room and fraternity spaces.

So are those fo flor area rugs covering your entire living room? Bo: I worked out the area of the living room and figured it would take 9 of the fo flor area rugs to fit the entire space. It turned out I had to cut down a few to make the mats fit perfectly, which was really easy using regular scissors. It took me about 1 hour to put it all in place.

Can you wash those? B: Absolutely. The best part about the rugs is that whenever I spill anything, I just have to take the individual mat and throw it in the washing machine, wait for it to dry and put it right back down.

Any other selling points? B: The alumni love to see that mats every time they come up to the house. The other advantage was that I was able to customize them to my individual chapter and fraternity which makes them a great asset to have. They look great in the entrances and enhance the overall look and pride in the house for everyone. The ability to wash them is a huge advantage to other options because they get heavily used.

How would you define a “frat mat”? B: I would define the “frat mat” as the ideal welcome and utility mat and rug for any fraternity or sorority house. The realistic fo flor options are also a great solution for personal rooms to protect the existing floor from all of the “activities” that take place.

Looking for Southern, style, and tradition? Enter James P. Adams and Samuel C. Thomas, III, childhood friends and founders of Southern Ties. The guys teamed up a year ago, while still in high school, to create a company that James could present as his senior project.

Now, as freshmen at Sewanee and Hampden-Sydney, these two are making a name for themselves in men’s preppy neckwear. We caught up with Sam to take a look at how it all started.

How did SoTies get off the ground? Sam: We both had part-time jobs and used the money to buy the fabric. We originally made 4 or 5 ties and posted them to our Facebook page after James’ senior project. Our big break came when a woman from Louisville, KY called us up and ordered 12. We skipped school one day and made them ourselves.

You made them yourselves…how did that work out? S: Well, my Grandmother had a sewing machine. But she actually wouldn’t help us. I sort of remembered how to sew from my Home Ec class in 6th grade, but I’ll admit our first tie didn’t look great…

Did the business take off from there? S: For the most part, yes. Since James had created a fake website for the project, we worked off of that. Last July we bought the domain name and got our business licenses. When the website launched, we wanted to make sure we were offering something to distinguish us. That’s when we decided to do something cool with packaging and came up with the idea to include an engraved box with every tie.

Who runs the show while you and James are at school? S: We both do, with the help of Mike Wood. We brought Mike on board last August to help us out while we are in school. He takes orders, handles customer service, and manages the business out of our office HQ in Fredericksburg, VA.

Is there a crowd favorite? S: Definitely the Blue and White Seersucker Neck Tie. We launched our spring line on March 1st, and two days later, we were sold out. Luckily, we just got in a new order.

What has been most exciting about launching SoTies? S: The people I’ve been able to meet. Between retail stores and various companies, a lot of people have been really great about giving us advice.

So, what’s next? S: We certainly want to expand. We’ve been talking with manufacturers and have plans to bring new products into the line, slowly. We want to take our time so that we make sure everything is exactly where we want it to be and we are offering a product we really want out there. We also have plans to update our website and create a Campus Rep program starting next fall.

From the website ‘about us’: “Southern Ties promises to incorporate the ideas of Southern, Style, and Tradition into every product so that gentleman and belles alike can benefit from the great pride and heritage of the South. James P. Adams and Samuel C. Thomas, III are pleased to introduce you to Southern Ties, a brand that strives to let everyone have a piece of the South.”
